Group of Five New Year’s Six Watch, Week 6: Cincinnati won weekend
By Dante Pryor
5. SMU Mustangs (5-0, 1-0)
The SMU Mustangs have had success with transfer quarterbacks. First Texas transfer Shane Buchele had great success with the Mustangs, now Oklahoma transfer Tanner Mordecai has played well so far. The offense has not lost a beat with Mordecai.
After a second consecutive win in the “Battle for the Iron Skillet” in their game against the TCU Horned Frogs, SMU showed no signs of a hangover, thrashing the USF Bulls 41-17. Mordecai threw for 301 yards and four touchdowns.
The Mustangs have their Power Five win in hand and can play Cincinnati in November, but SMU also plays current first-place team Houston in two weeks.
4. Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (5-0, 1-0)
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers is a mainstay here on the Watch. Unfortunately for the Chants, they need lots of help to make the New Year’s Six. Coastal’s win against Kansas has no value in contrast to every other team’s Power Five win on the Watch.
In addition, the Sun Belt is not as strong this season as it was last season. Louisiana and Appalachian State are not as good this season. That said, Coastal Carolina is a good football team. Grayson McCall is one of the best quarterbacks in the country, and Jamey Chadwell will be a candidate somewhere next season.
