3. San Diego State Aztecs (4-0)

The Aztecs continued winning and moving up the rankings. San Diego State and their 2-0 Pac-12 record broke into the top 25 this week. The Cougars and Bearcats have atop the New Year’s Six Watch; they need some help.

It did not help the Aztecs that Fresno State went to the Island and lost to Hawai’i. Not only does that give the Bulldogs two losses, but it also means that it will not be a game pitting two top 25 teams against one another. San Diego needed that badly.

2. BYU Cougars (5-0)

It is hard not to see that an undefeated BYU team should have a legitimate playoff resume. First, the committee has to see the Cougars for what they indeed are, a football independent. BYU is neither a Power Five nor a Group of Five program, despite previously playing in the WAC and Mountain West.

What they did in the past should not matter. The Cougars are scheduled like Notre Dame-West. So far, they are 2-0 against top-25 teams and could go 5-0 against the Pac-12. In addition to those five games, the Cougars have two additional Power Five teams on its schedule (Baylor and Virginia).

Committee, respect the schedule. At the very least, put two undefeated Group of Five programs in the New Year’s Six.
