College Football 2021: Ranking 17 undefeated teams heading into Week 6
By Ryan Kay
Among the 17 undefeated college football teams, only a select few are not ranked nationally in the latest Week 6 AP Top 25. The vast majority of the undefeated teams are attempting to get another victory in their sixth game of the still-early 2021 season.
Their hope is to continue to be undefeated and for a group of teams, to move up into the top 15 of the newest AP poll or make their first appearance as a nationally top 25 ranked team.
We will look closely, examine, and then finally rank all17 FBS teams that are currently undefeated. This week’s rankings will be based on multiple factors such as their victories versus currently ranked opponents, wins against Power Five teams, how many victories the teams have had on the road, and their strength of schedule according to teamrankings.com.
Also, we will look at bowl projections by two college football experts.
Some of the undefeated teams not only won in Week 5 play but they dominated their opponent as well. There are also some teams that pulled off some impressive upsets and there were teams that simply won and remained undefeated.
Looking at the individual resumes of these 17 teams, some have more valuable victories than others but being undefeated heading into Week 6 is still impressive regardless of who they have and have not beaten this season.
Let’s now take a look at the 17 undefeated teams in these rankings.
Defeated: Montana State (19-16), at Northern Illinois (50-43), Ball State (45-12), at UConn (24-22)
Strength of Schedule: 125th
Road Victories: 2
Wins vs. Power 5 teams: 0
Victories vs. current ranked opponents: 0
Ranked in AP Poll: No
College Bowl Projections: Kyle Bonagura: None; Mark Schlabach: New Mexico Bowl
Week 5 result: Bye
Next opponent: at Air Force
The Cowboys had a bye in Week 5 as they prepare for Air Force in their first Mountain West game of the season. Wyoming did not play well in their season opener against an FCS opponent at home where they only won by three points. The Cowboys nearly lost on the road to a MAC opponent in Northern Illinois, where they were victorious by only a touchdown so their season did not begin necessarily the way that head coach Craig Bohl may have anticipated that it would go.
Wyoming did bounce back in a big way with an impressive home victory against Ball State, which just this past weekend, upsetting previously undefeated Army. However, they struggled mightily on the road against winless UConn in their fourth game of this year. The Cowboys have had some time to prepare for Air Force and they will keep the game close heading into the third quarter but the Falcons will pull away and more than likely give Wyoming their first loss of the season.
Week 6 prediction: Wyoming 17, Air Force 28
