Dishonorable Mentions

San Diego State (at San Jose State): I’m still a believer in the 2020 Mountain West champion San Jose State Spartans. At some point, they’re finally going to get it together. It might not be a wise thought that it happens against such a tough defense when the offense is sputtering, but that’s what makes it an upset. It’s San Jose State’s homecoming, so they’ll have some extra motivation. Maybe this is finally their week.

Cincinnati (vs. UCF): It’s still UCF, a Gus Malzahn offense, and the Knights slinging the ball on offense. The Knights will need a lot of offense to keep up with Desmond Ridder and crew. We’ve seen Gus pull rabbits out of his hat in these situations before, why can’t it happen again?

Georgia (vs. Kentucky): You know that disclaimer I put at the beginning about picks not being a prediction? Here’s a prediction for you: Kentucky isn’t winning this game. So why is it even on this list? Because the Wildcats are the best team remaining on Georgia’s schedule. Plus, Kentucky catches Georgia in a good spot: after big rival Auburn and before bigger rival Florida. Luckily Georgia has a bye next week so they might not look too far ahead. The lower scoring this game is, the more it helps Kentucky.

Wisconsin (vs. Army): A Wisconsin offense that can’t get out of its own way with turnovers for days against an Army team that’s as good at holding the ball and draining opposing defenses that’s as good as anyone. What could possibly go wrong? The bright side is if Army holds the ball for 40 minutes, that’s less time for Graham Mertz to throw interceptions. Army gives up just 54 yards per game on the ground, while Wisconsin only gives up 41 rush yards per game. The first to 14 might win this game.

Nebraska (at Minnesota): Two of the hardest teams to figure out in all of college football. Nebraska is clearly getting better but they keep finding ways to lose. Minnesota can’t decide if they want to be good or not: they played Ohio State tougher than the score indicates, then struggled against Miami (OH). Then they shut out Colorado but lost to Bowling Green. This game can go either way, but when a game is this close and you can’t trust one side’s special teams, that might seal the deal.
