5. James Franklin, Penn State HC

You need two attributes to be a good head coach in the SEC, and Penn State head coach James Franklin possesses both of them. Franklin is one of the best recruiters in the country who hires great assistant coaches and coordinators.

Franklin already has quite the coaching tree.  Two of his former assistants, Charles Huff and Ricky Rahne, are head coaches at Marshall and Old Dominion, respectively. Joe Moorhead is the offensive coordinator at Oregon, and Josh Gattis runs the offense at Michigan.

Franklin will have little issue finding coordinators and assistants at LSU. They pay in Baton Rouge well, and a stop at LSU looks good on a resume.

Franklin is also one of the best recruiters in the country. Not only does Franklin recruit western Pennsylvania well, but he also recruits the Detroit metro area and southeastern Ohio. Many of Penn State’s all-time best recruits were signed by Franklin.

Though it seems like a lifetime ago, Franklin was the head coach the last time Vanderbilt was good. That was the only time in school history the Commodores had sustained success. The Commodores went to three bowl games for the only time in school history under Franklin.

Vanderbilt finished the season in the top 25 twice under Franklin, the only time in school history. When LSU begins its search, Franklin will get a phone call.
