College Football Rankings 2021: Projected AP Top 25 for Week 9
The first upset of the week came early as Coastal Carolina went to App State on Wednesday evening and lost a tight game by a field goal as time expired. The Chanticleers will have to get back to the drawing board and likely win out if they want to have a shot at a New Year’s Six bowl, but there may be no coming back from this one. Still a Top 25 team, but just barely.
Arkansas is going to be a rare three-loss team in the AP Top 25 through eight weeks. I think the Razorbacks’ blowout win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff is going to be valued slightly more than a two-point BYU win over a broken Pac-12 foe. It’ll be either Arkansas or BYU here, but my money is on the Razorbacks.
I thought we would see UTSA on upset alert on Saturday night as Louisiana Tech hosted the Roadrunners fresh off a new No. 24 ranking, but they won this one without shedding a bead of sweat. The Roadrunners built a 42-10 lead in the second half thanks to some incredible defensive plays and cruised to a big win to improve to 8-0.
San Diego State built a 20-0 lead and it looked like Brady Hoke’s squad was going to cruise to victory at Air Force, but the Falcons made things interesting late with a couple of touchdowns. The Aztecs improve to 7-0 on the year and they should remain in that 20-25 range after the 20-14 win.
Yes, I believe we will see Iowa State back in the AP Top 25 this week after upsetting the No. 8 team in the country. The Cyclones got a stellar performance from Brock Purdy to take down the Cowboys and, believe it or not, they’re back in the Big 12 title conversation. Matt Campbell is doing Matt Campbell things.
