Grading the hire

McGuire has been a hot name among Red Raider fans for a few years and this is a move that the fans can get behind. He’s not a big name but Texas Tech isn’t going to attract a proven coach with an elite resume.

You can get the hot-shot coordinator or someone like Tommy Tuberville who came to Lubbock after being let go at Auburn. The Red Raiders just don’t have a ton to offer a proven commodity because it’s going to be a rebuild.

The roster isn’t terrible and the team could make a bowl game this season but the expectations aren’t going to be super high. Just getting back to the postseason on a yearly basis is the goal.

So this was a smart move. McGuire is a rising talent but has head coaching experience. His ties will help in the state and getting the recruiting ramped up to a respectable level is the best way to get this program back to being a winner in the Big 12.
