Playoff contenders survive

This time of year is all about surviving. Cincinnati has done that in recent weeks but even that has been a little overblown: the Bearcats have only had two games decided by 10 points or less all season and the smallest margin of victory was seven. No team has had the ball in the fourth quarter with a chance to do more than tie the game.

Cincinnati hasn’t been dominant like Georgia has been this season and it’s why the Bearcats are fifth in the playoff rankings and not in the top four. The committee doesn’t mind grinding out wins but it does penalize you if you do it in the American as opposed to the Pac-12.

At any rate, SMU is headed to town this weekend and the 8-2 Mustangs have as good a shot as anyone of upsetting the Bearcats. Only I don’t see it happening. Desmond Ridder stands out and Cincinnati survives by about 10 points.

And out West on Saturday night, I also think Oregon wins a tough game at Utah. The Ducks have struggled in recent weeks and face a very tough Utah (7-3) team that is poised to reach the Pac-12 title game from the South division.

Oregon is leading the way in the North and the defense, as well as the running game will lead the Ducks to a hard-fought win on Saturday night.
