Alabama Football: 3 Takeaways from the Iron Bowl
By Dante Pryor
1. The Crimson Tide are still alive for the Playoff
Supporters of Playoff expansion are not watching the last three weeks of the season. These have become playoff elimination games. The Michigan Wolverines eliminated the Ohio State Buckeyes from contention with their win in “The Game.”
Auburn almost eliminated Alabama tonight. Though Georgia could likely absorb a loss in the SEC Championship Game, the Crimson Tide lose in the title game; they are eliminated from contention. That is also why the Playoff rankings don’t matter much until next Tuesday.
Today’s win keeps Alabama’s hopes of making the College Football Playoff alive. It is a testament to what Nick Saban built in Tuscaloosa, considering how much talent they lost and how many young players are contributing this season.
That said, if Alabama plays like this in the SEC Championship Game, it will not be close. Alabama could not run the football again this afternoon. The Crimson Tide offensive line has underperformed most of the season.
Auburn did an unbelievable job pressing Bryce Young most of the game. The Tigers’ defense looked gassed late. Georgia, however, has the depth to prevent that. Alabama might still be alive but have to play their most complete game of the season to have any chance of winning next Saturday.
