NCAAF: Ranking the 25 worst games of past Heisman trophy winners
Ranking the 25 worst games of past Heisman trophy winners: 10. Ty Detmer
- 1990 Season stats: 5,188 passing yards, 41 touchdowns, 28 interceptions
- Worst game: 442 passing yards, 2 touchdowns, 5 interceptions
Nowadays, it’s pretty common to see college quarterbacks throw up some of the most ridiculous stats you can imagine. But before racking up thousands upon thousands of yards was normal, they routinely produced what many would consider modest numbers.
In the case of Ty Detmer, it was as though he was from the future. In three of his four seasons at BYU, Detmer never threw for less than 4,000 yards and 32 touchdowns. And while his 1990 Heisman Trophy has quite a bit of dust on it at this point, his numbers are arguably better than anyone’s ever.
On the year, Detmer sliced and diced everyone to the tune of 5,188 passing yards and 41 touchdowns for a 10-3 BYU team. As for his worst game during his Heisman winning season, it wasn’t that bad, kind of.
During a showdown against Oregon, BYU got the stuffing beat out of them by 16 points. Detmer did complete 33 of his 57 passes for 442 yards and two touchdowns. But, he threw an unforgivable five interceptions.
