Ranking the 25 worst games of past Heisman trophy winners: 25. Troy Smith

  • 2006 Season stats: 2,542 yards, 30 touchdowns, 6 interceptions
  • Worst game: 108 passing yards, 0 touchdowns, 1 interceptions

Remember quarterback Troy Smith? Considering that he was very much a one-hit wonder, you probably don’t.

Well, allow us to refresh your memory.

Smith was one of the great quarterbacks for Ohio State in recent memory. In 2006, he really came into his own. He threw for 2,542 yards, 30 touchdowns with only six interceptions. As a result, Ohio State went 12-1. Their only loss of the season came in the BCS Championship against Florida.

Every game, Smith was bound to make the Sports Center highlight reel. With that said, during a midseason matchup against lowly Illinois, Smith looked very much human. While Ohio State went on to win the game, he threw 108 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception.

In the end, Ohio State took home the victory but not before some serious issues down the stretch. After scoring 17 points in the first half, Ohio State was enjoying the shutout they were pitching through three quarters. In the final period, Illinois went on to score 10 points to make things interesting.

If they scored one more time to tie the game, who knows what would’ve happened. Considering how badly Smith was struggling, there’s a good chance Ohio State would’ve came up short.
