Ranking the 25 worst games of past Heisman trophy winners: 5. Gino Torretta

  • 1992 Season stats: 3,060 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, 7 interceptions
  • Worst game: 80 passing yards, 0 touchdowns

For the most part, fans associate the University of Miami with mediocrity. Who can blame them? Seemingly every year, the Canes are falling woefully short of their expectations and normally find themselves near the bottom of the barrel. However, back in the 1990s, Miami was the place to be. Not just for parties, but for college football.

In 1992, quarterback Gino Torretta led Miami to a near-flawless record of 11-1. There only defeat came at a pretty bad time as it was in the Sugar Bowl. But, that isn’t the game in which Torretta played his worst.

The 1992 Heisman Trophy winner played like garbage against Penn State. While they managed to eke out a three-point win, they won in spite of Torretta, not because of him.

Torretta played horrific, he completed just 11 of his 31 passes for 80 yards and didn’t throw a single touchdown. We find it nearly impossible to believe that a player can chuck the ball down the field 31 times and end the game with only 80 yards. Yet, in this case, it’s true.
