The best performances of the past 25 Heisman Trophy winners: 21. Danny Wuerffel

Florida fans recall the good ole days. During the 1990s, Florida spent most of its time near the top of the college football charts. With winning season after winning season, former quarterback Danny Wuerffel is remembered fondly.

After putting together back-to-back seasons of 12-1 records, Wuerffel was handed the Heisman in 1996. His numbers fit the bill perfectly. Wuerffel registered 3,625 passing yards and 39 touchdowns to only 13 picks. He wasn’t the most accurate quarterback, finishing with a completion percentage of 57.5% but he got the job done on a nightly basis.

Wuerffel’s best game came when his team needed him most. In arguably the biggest game of the year, Florida took on Florida State in the Sugar Bowl. Florida State at the time was undefeated and many were expecting them to roll right over the Gators. That, of course, didn’t happen.

Wuerffel was the main reason why his Florida squad reigned supreme that day, throwing for three touchdowns and running in another. His efforts led to a 32 point win. The Gators are still trying to find their way back to that level of success these days.
