Three takeaways from the 122nd Army-Navy Game
By Dante Pryor
Implications from the game.
Navy’s reward is simple; they get bragging rights for a season. The Midshipmen are not going to a bowl game, and their season is over. Navy, a seven-point underdog, will simply have to relish playing spoiler in this game.
What exactly did the Middies spoil? The Army came into the game 8-3. A win would have given the Black Knights an opportunity at a 10-win season with a win in its bowl game. This season could have been Army’s third 10-win season in five years, with Jeff Monken owning all of the Army’s ten-win seasons.
Navy’s upset of the Army also means that the Black Knights cannot claim the Commander-in-Chief Trophy outright. The Black Knights defeated the Air Force but lost to the Navy with the Air Force defeating the Navy.
Since everyone has one win in the series of games this season, Army does retain the trophy because of the tie but cannot claim outright victory. The tie in the series comes after Army had won the trophy two of the last three seasons.
