College Football 2021: Ranking the best trophies for bowl games
By Shane Lunnen
8. Independence Bowl Trophy
Like the Cotton Bowl trophy, the Independence Bowl trophy also has an intertwining metal part coming up from the base. On top is an eagle with an original 13 states United States flag. With a football on the base, the whole thing is very American and patriotic.
The bowl is so named because it was founded in 1976, the year of the country’s bicentennial. The bowl has hosted teams from many conferences throughout its history including the SEC, the Big 12, and the ACC. Also included have been many of the Group of Five conferences.
The most notable game in the bowl’s history occurred in 2000 when a rare snowstorm hit the Shreveport, Louisiana area. Mississippi State and Texas A&M played in a wild game, ending in an overtime 43-41 win for the Bulldogs.
This edition of the trophy came about because of an unfortunate incident with the previous trophy. Back in 2011, Missouri Tigers mascot Truman broke the trophy. The Tigers defeated North Carolina and were awarded a broken trophy for their efforts.
The winner between BYU and UAB in this year’s game should not have the same trouble with the current monster-sized trophy.
