College Football: Top 5 transfer portal quarterback additions for 2022
By Dante Pryor
Max Johnson: From LSU to Texas A&M
It was somewhat curious that Max Johnson ended up at LSU and not Florida State. His father, Brad Johnson, played there, and his uncle, Mark Richt, was the offensive coordinator during the Bobby Bowden era.
Johnson’s transfer to Texas A&M is not much of a shocker; he will play with his younger brother Jake.
The elder Johnson was a four-star prospect and the 10th rated pro-style quarterback in the country when he decided to go to LSU. It was somewhat of a surprise that Johnson would transfer given that TJ Finley had transferred to Auburn and Myles Brennan could not stay healthy.
The prospect of playing with his brother must have been too much to pass up. In addition, Ed Orgeron and the coaching staff who recruited him had been fired. The Tigers do have five-star Walker Howard coming in this fall, but Texas A&M has a top-flight recruit coming to College Station as well.
Five-star, dual-threat quarterback Connor Weigman arrives next season at A&M. Zach Calzada, last season’s starter, did enter the transfer portal, but Haynes King looks as if he’s staying put. Next season will come down between Weigman, Johnson, and King for the starting job.
