My money is on Casey Thompson

Thompson is the only thing on the roster that be considered a proven commodity for Nebraska football at the quarterback position. He played well for Texas last season and he understands what it’s like to play at a place like Nebraska.

And make no mistake, there is going to be a lot of pressure on both Frost and the quarterback next season. There will be pressure on the entire team. Frost has to get the Huskers back to the postseason and he needs a steady quarterback to do that.

Purdy and Smothers both have the potential to emerge and it will be best if all three quarterbacks are on the roster this fall but I don’t think that will happen.

Since there is a new offensive system, no quarterback is going to have the edge. That’s why I’m predicting that Thompson will wind up as the starter. He’s just the most ready to win right now and that’s what Nebraska needs.

I think he’ll play the best this spring and take command. The competition shouldn’t be decided until the fall and I do think Purdy will give Nebraska a reason to be excited about his future with the Huskers.

But when Nebraska football heads to Ireland next August to take on Northwestern, Thompson will be the Huskers’ starting quarterback.
