#4: Kirk Ferentz, Iowa

Ferentz is the only head coach on this countdown that has held his current job for more than a couple of years. In fact, he has been HC of the Hawkeyes since 1999 and recently agreed to an extension that would keep him with them for the foreseeable future. But does he really deserve that kind of elite treatment?

As I have mentioned in past discussions regarding Ferentz’s extension, he will now be at a program for so long that very few other head coaches in college football history can relate to such fortune, yet he has done less in his tenure than anyone who can (such as Bobby Bowden, Joe Paterno, etc.).

The reasoning behind his never-ending time with Iowa most likely has to do with the Hawkeyes being content with where they are when considering their historical standards in the world of football. But still, Ferentz is getting the perks of being an all-time great HC when he isn’t one.

#3: Marcus Freeman, Notre Dame

Now we are shifting gears entirely, from a veteran head coach to a man who has never been a head coach at all.

Marcus Freeman appears to be a player’s coach, one that can really establish a strong leadership role while being an HC that guys want to play for. However, he’s still new to the scene, and Notre Dame has never been seen as an easy place to win at.

With that said, the Fighting Irish will probably need a moment to regroup before being a top team again. However, Freeman does seem like the type of guy to have them winning again once he has a little bit of time under his belt.
