Quarterback

Starter: Drew Pyne

Backup: Tyler Buchner

Gone is one-year starter Jack Coan, who did a solid job of filling in last season. Now, the battle is going to be between Drew Pyne and Tyler Buchner. This is going to be the most important decision that Freeman is going to make in his first year as the head coach.

Drew Pyne played in some games when Coan was injured last season and that may give him a leg up in the competition. Buchner was more highly rated coming out of high school and it might be that the talent wins out in the end. Pyne was not spectacular in his fill-in duty for Coan and that is why it is not a sure thing that he gets handed the starting job. This is a battle that may extend well into fall camp.

The only other contender for the job unless Notre Dame brings in a transfer would be true freshman Steve Angeli. It is unrealistic to expect a guy that just arrived on campus to win the job, but never say never.
