Skyhawks coach Jason Simpson had been building this program slowly, and last year was the payoff. UT Martin managed a 10-3 mark and even won a playoff game.

Powering that team was 1,121-yard rusher Peyton Logan, who averaged an outstanding seven-plus yards per carry. So, too, is Deven Sims, who was a hard hitter at safety. Both of them have graduated.

No real threat to Boise State here. Even when both of those guys were playing, Western Kentucky crushed them 59-21.

Final score: Boise State 42, UT Martin 7 (3-0, 1-0)

UTEP had one of the best stories in 2021 in college football. Starting at 6-1, they were a college football darling, until the back half of their schedule crushed them. A 7-6 season is still good by Miner standards though, and coach Dana Dimel deserves credit.

But, big-time receiver Jacob Cowing has transferred to Arizona. With running back Ronald Awatt, and 100+ tackler defenders Breon Hayward and Tyrice Knight departing, too, there’s not much meat left on last year’s bone.

Boise State in another rout.

Final score: Boise State 38, UTEP 7 (4-0, 1-0)
