LSU Football No. 2 – Myles Brennan, Quarterback

LSU Football has seen a number of elite QBs walk into Tiger Stadium, but to say that Myles Brennan’s time with LSU has been disappointing would be a severe understatement, to say the least.

Not only did we have to wait until 2020 to see the sixth-year senior start a game for LSU, following the departure of Joe Burrow in 2019. But even then we only saw him start in three games before he was sidelined for the rest of the year with an injury. At which point Max Johnson took over at the quarterback position, and flourished.

However, now Johnson’s gone, and Myles Brennan has nothing but inexperience waiting in the wings behind him. Add this to the fact that Brennan pulled out of the transfer portal after Brian Kelly was hired, which means that he, at least on some level, is open to playing for the former Irish head coach. This leads me to believe that it’s Myles Brennan’s job to lose come September.

Plus, given how Kelly typically leans towards more experienced quarterbacks, and that all of the backups competing for the role haven’t played more than four games combined, there’s no reason to believe that any other signal-caller will start the 2022 season over Brennan.

But what makes him a breakout candidate you might ask? Well, first and foremost he’ll be walking into the upcoming season with one of the most talented receiving corps in college football, let alone the SEC. As well as a group he’s more than familiar with, as LSU football is set to return all five of their leading receivers from a season ago, not to mention ULL-transfer, Kyren Lacy.

He will also have his first full season with Kayshonn Boutte, who is arguably the top NFL prospect in Baton Rouge and the best receiver in the SEC, if not the entire country. Mix that in with the balanced style of offense Brian Kelly is sure to implement, as he’s done in the past at both Notre Dame, and Cincinnati, and Myles Brennan should have no problem moving the ball downfield.

That’s especially true with the litany of running backs the Tigers have at their disposal, including returning senior John Emery Jr., and senior transfer, Noah Cain.

Oh, and did I mention that Brian Kelly also brought in offensive guru, Mike Denbrock, to help lead LSU’s offense? Denbrock’s Cincinnati team set school records for touchdowns (70), points scored (516), and ranked among the nation’s leaders in points per game (36.9) in 2021.

With Denbrock calling plays, and Brian Kelly’s history of getting production on offense, we can expect to see a high-flying team take the field in 2022, and at the helm of it all will be Myles Brennan.
