Jonathan Mingo

The departures of wide receivers Braylon Sanders and Dontario Drummond leave Jonathan Mingo as the veteran receiver on the Ole Miss football team.

Mingo was a four-star recruit when he signed with Ole Miss in 2019. In 2019, Elijah Moore was the primary receiver and was the number one target along with tight end Kenny Yeboah. Last year the main targets were Sanders and Drummond as Mingo battled an injury, which sidelined him for most of the season.

In 2022, Mingo has a chance to become the primary target for Dart or Altmyer. Mingo had 897 receiving yards, and seven touchdown catches in his first three seasons. While not the most impressive numbers, he has never been the number one guy. A lot of times, he was number three or even four. With the chance to be the primary target, he could match his career stats in his final season.

Mingo has shown flashes of his talent over the three years. He has a similar build as former receiver AJ Brown. Mingo stands 6’2” 225 lbs and Brown is 6’1” 226 lbs. The Rebel offense can utilize him in similar roles as the team did with Brown and use Mingo’s size and speed.

There is a lot of uncertainty around the playmakers out wide next year. Mingo and Michael Trigg are most likely going to be the main targets.

If Mingo stays healthy and works on some of his drops, he will have a big year next year with the Rebels. He has a chance to step like Moore did when Brown and DK Metcalf left and do what Sanders and Drummond did after Moore was gone.

This is Mingo’s opportunity to be the playmaker the Rebels need.
