Ranking the 5 best college football states entering the 2022 season
By Austin Lloyd
2. North Carolina
At this point, I won’t even bother bringing up any FCS teams, as I feel the FBS-caliber programs for these last two states make the required cases by themselves, and that trend starts with North Carolina.
North Carolina has not one, not two, but three Power Five programs that have promising futures on the horizon: North Carolina, North Carolina State, and Wake Forest.
While UNC was the worst of these three, the Tar Heels have a legendary head coach in Mack Brown and the second-best 2022 recruiting haul in the ACC, so how bad could they possibly be?
NC State is in a good place under head coach Dave Doeren, as they have won 17 games in the last two seasons.
Speaking of great coaches named Dave, Wake Forest’s Dave Clawson just gave the Demon Deacons what just might be their greatest year ever in 2021, finishing with a final record of 11-3.
The Duke Blue Devils are the only Power Five school in North Carolina that doesn’t look too hot this year, clinching the crown for worst football team in the ACC last season. But luckily, the Sun Belt’s App State Mountaineers have done enough to make up for their absence, having avoided a win total of under nine every season since 2014.
