Some college football teams shocked everyone and make some noise in 2021 with breakout seasons. But which teams could take a step back?

Each year, there are college football teams that go from high expectations to disappointments. Over the years, we’ve seen everyone from Clemson to Oregon to even Alabama fall under the category of “disappointments”.

Just last season, teams like Clemson, Oregon, and Oklahoma were all disappointing as none won their respective conference after dominating for years. Heck, even Ohio State took a step back.

This doesn’t mean that they were awful, but “disappointing” in Clemson terms is 9-3 while that would be a fantastic season for most other ACC programs. That would be a breakout season for someone like Duke or Georgia Tech but Clemson has raised the expectations every year under Dabo Swinney.

Much like Clemson, Oklahoma fell short of its conference title and playoff aspirations in 2021 and the same could be said for Oregon which felt like that was “the year” for the Ducks to reach elite heights. USC, too, could be lumped into this, and Ohio State fans would tell you that not making it to the playoff and losing to Michigan would qualify as a massive disappointment.

All of these teams took steps back in 2021 from their 2020 accomplishments and success and that theme will continue with these five teams in 2022.
