5. Washington

The state of Washington comes in last on this list due to its 2021 showing having the ability to have been worse, along with it having some of the stronger odds on here to pick things up in 2022. But still, last year hurt to swallow.

Beginning with the pair of Power Five programs, the Washington Huskies had their worst performance (4-8) since they went winless in 2008. Their rivals, the Washington State Cougars, at least managed to finish their own regular-season stretch with a positive record of 7-5.

But despite this solid showing from Wazzu, the Cougs still found a way to sully it by getting beaten up by the Central Michigan Chippewas in the Sun Bowl. That is definitely not the way that a historically-lackluster program wants to end what was previously a decent run.

While those two circuses unfolded, Eastern Washington of the FCS shined as the state’s best squad, and that’s never a promising sign when discussing how good or bad a state is in college football terms.

Lastly, both Washington and Washington State have failed to make the top eight in a 12-team conference’s 2022 recruiting rankings. Ouch.
