Last year, Mark Whipple’s scheme used a one-two punch from Lucas Krull and Gavin Bartholomew at tight end. With Krull gone to the NFL and Whipple going to Nebraska, Bartholomew has a chance to make a new role for himself.

Under new offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti, that role could be a huge change in volume usage. Bartholomew comes in as the undisputed top tight end in Pitt’s offense, which is a huge contrast from where he started last year. He was not even in the top 1,300 nationally in recruiting when he came to Pitt football in 2021.

But, Bartholomew made quick word of getting people to know his name. He made a freshman all-American team by being a solid check-down option next to Krull. His big body is paired with surprising open-field agility, which helped him get 28 grabs in the offense last year.

With Pickett gone, likely starter Kedon Slovis needs large-bodied check-down options to feel safe. Bartholomew fits the bill well for that role.
