Too high: Tennessee

Last season, Tennessee ended up being better than expected and that’s led to the Vols having the fourth-highest win total projection of all SEC football teams in 2022.

Quarterback Hendon Hooker is a big part of that. Head coach Josh Heupel seems like a perfect hire and this team isn’t one you’ll want to see on the schedule each week.

But that doesn’t mean it’s going to be a top-four team in the SEC next season. I think the Vols will lose at South Carolina late in the season and the opening game against Pittsburgh will be a test too.

I don’t think there’s any way this team doesn’t reach the postseason but eight feels like a lot with games against Pitt, LSU, Kentucky, Florida, Ole Miss, Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama.

Of course, eight wins are very possible but that’s assuming the Vols will stay ahead of Florida and LSU next season and I’m not so sure.

Others that are too high: Mississippi State (7), Missouri (6)

Both of these teams could prove 247 sports’ SEC football win projections to be true. It’s not as if they are outlandish or anything. But if anyone besides Vanderbilt is going to drop below six wins, my money is on Missouri. I also think Mississippi State will take a small step back, yet the Bulldogs will still find their way to a bowl game.
