2022 College Football Rankings: Updated top 10 after spring
10. Michigan State
There are a bunch of teams that are in contention for this spot. Arkansas, Cincinatti, Pittsburgh, North Carolina State, Baylor, Texas, Wake Forest, Oregon — each team could make sense in that spot, but Michigan State deserves more credit than it’s getting.
The ESPN FPI has Penn State rated above the Spartans and while I get it, I don’t think that’s how things are going to play out in the 2022 college football season.
Payton Thorne is back at quarterback and that’s huge for Michigan State. Losing Kenneth Walker and replacing his production won’t be easy but adding Jalen Berger from Wisconsin and 2020 Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year Jarek Broussard at running back certainly helps.
Jayden Reed is also back at wide receiver. The defense has question marks and that’s where Mel Tucker will need to prove he’s as elite as his salary says he is. The Spartans are for real though and after winning 10 games a year ago, a similar season in 2022 wouldn’t be surprising at all.
