Penn State Football: 3 takeaways from 2022 spring practice
By Shane Lunnen
3. Sean Clifford is the unquestioned starter
This may disappoint several fans in Nittany Nation looking for someone new under center this fall. However Sean Clifford will no doubt be QB1 when Penn State opens at Purdue to start the 2022 campaign.
Now in his sixth year in Happy Valley and what looks to be his fourth as the starting quarterback, Clifford has the hunger to rebound after a couple tough years. Not all of Penn State’s offensive woes have fallen on Clifford’s shoulders. He had a tough break last year with an injury against Iowa and his offensive line certainly has done him no favors throughout most of his career.
To those looking for Clifford to be replaced, let’s take a look behind him. Christian Veilleux looked good in relief against Rutgers last season but probably is not ready yet for the full time job. He is certainly a capable backup and should be the second guy behind Clifford.
Behind Veilleux are highly touted and former five star Drew Allar and Beau Pribula. Both looked like true freshmen in the Blue-White game. Allar in particular showed flashes of his talent but also threw two interceptions.
Summer workouts and fall camp could certainly bring some changes. But as it stands now, Clifford is cemented at the starter and it is hard to imagine any of the other three quarterbacks replacing him.
