Grant Calcaterra to Eagles (6th round)

Grant Calcaterra has one of the incredible NFL draft stories that makes it so fascinating to watch. He was a former Oklahoma player that had a really good season in 2018 (396 yards, six touchdowns) before deciding to quit college football to become a firefighter.

Eventually, Grant Calcaterra went back to the game and decided to transfer to SMU with former Oklahoma quarterback Tanner Mordecai. He was also committed to Auburn at one point.

Yet, going to the Mustangs was a good move and in 2022 Calcaterra became a vital part of the SMU offense catching 38 passes for 465 yards and three touchdowns for an average of 12.8 yards per catch.

He’s got 79-career receptions and a career average of 14 yards per catch which shows that he can stretch the middle of the field. He’s also got great hands and will be a threat in the red zone.

The Eagles obviously have a pretty good tight end in their own right with Dallas Goedert, yet Philly can now attack teams with two talented pass-catching tight ends and Calcaterra already has experience playing with Jalen Hurts, although Calcaterra only played in a few games that season.

However, he runs a 4.62 in the 40 and has great hands. If he had stayed at Oklahoma, he also probably would have been a day-two selection. Instead, the Eagles got him on day three, which will prove to be an absolute steal down the road.
