Boston College Football: 3 Upperclassmen who must step up in 2022
By Dante Pryor
1. Phil Jurkovec: Quarterback
As previously stated, as Phil Jurkovec goes, the Boston College Eagles go. He is the catalyst for everything the Eagles want to do and where they want to go. That was clear last season. The offense struggled without Jurkovec but had its struggles while he was in the lineup.
One of the issues was the offensive line. The line could not protect Jurkovec or backup quarterback Dennis Grosel. That is an area where Boston College football has to improve this fall.
Jurkovec showed what he could do when given time. The offensive line wasn’t great in 2021, but it was not as bad as in 2022. If there are still some issues in the trenches, the Eagles could go to the portal before the fall starts.
The Eagles will lean on the zone read and RPO game to compensate for the offensive line issues next season. Pat Garwo’s emergence last season makes the zone read game much more dangerous for the Eagles. Garwo’s emergence also keeps the defense on its toes when the Eagles run their RPO stuff.
Jurkovec is the key to all of this because of his ability with his arm and legs. When the Eagles run the zone read, you can’t just key on Garwo, and you can’t just key on Jurkovec.
Of all of the stars for the Eagles, Jurkovec has to be the one to play the best.
