Florida State Football: 3 upperclassmen who need to step up in 2022
By Dante Pryor
2. Jammie Robinson, Safety
The Florida State defense took considerable strides in 2021. The defensive unit allowed ten fewer points in 2021 (26.5) than in 2020 (36). some of that was due to Georgia’s transfer defensive end, Jermaine Johnson, and his 11 sacks.
The secondary, however, did not play poorly either. While the pass defense finished 74th in the country in passing yards allowed, the unit did finish 26th in the country with 14 interceptions. The secondary returns 15 players, ten who started at least one game, and they are talented.
The leader of this deep secondary room is safety Jammie Robinson. Defensive coordinators Randy Shannon and Adam fuller gave Robinson lots of responsibility on the defense last season, and he returned in kine. Robinson led the ‘Noles in tackles (84) and interceptions (4) and was third in tackles for loss (7).
Robinson also led Florida State in pass breakups (3) and forced fumbles (2).
With the loss of Johnson and Keir Thomas and their sack production, Florida State needs their secondary to cover well because of the question marks along the defensive front. The Seminoles signed Jared Verse via the portal at the defensive end; it remains to be seen if he can duplicate what he did at Albany in the ACC.
Expect the secondary and Robinson to continue their improvement this fall.
