Akron hires Joe Moorhead to replace Tom Arth

There was only one head coach hiring in the MAC this year, as former Mississippi State coach Joe Moorhead takes over at Akron. For Akron, this is a massive coup. The Zips have been lagging in the bottom of the MAC football standings since Terry Bowden took them to a Boca Raton Bowl in 2017, and have needed some juice.

Moorhead, who was forced out at Mississippi State because of cultural differences, rather than actual coaching ability, is a surprise for this Zips program. Moorhead had been the offensive coordinator for Oregon the last two seasons and could have certainly gotten a better job.

He replaces Tom Arth, who had a woeful 3-24 mark with the Zips. Arth was a strange hire, even if some people around the Akron program thought he was the guy. Prior to getting the Akron job, he went 9-13 at Chattanooga. At just 37 when he was hired, his youth was about all he had going for him. In the end, though, it didn’t amount to anything.
