This isn’t about Jimbo

There was a joke going around that just days after their verbal spat, Nick Saban decided to take Jimbo Fisher’s 2023 quarterback.

They are funny, but not entirely accurate. It’s true that Alabama essentially flipped Holstein, however, he re-opened his recruitment a couple of months ago and it was clear that Alabama was a reason why.

Multiple visits to Tuscaloosa during the spring made them the favorite and not long ago, he started trending with crystal ball projections to the Crimson Tide.

However, Alabama football fans can still take the satisfaction of keeping a really good football player away from Jimbo and the Aggies. Now, A&M is left scrambling at the quarterback position.

Texas A&M landed a five-star in 2022 in Conner Weigman, so it’s not as essential for the Aggies to land an elite QB recruit in this class, but they are taking their shot with Dante Moore from Michigan and Jaden Rashada from California.

Yet, they aren’t assumed to be the leader for either and don’t have an official visit locked in either. Moore will visit in June and the Aggies are in the mix for both quarterbacks, but if Holstein never de-committed, Fisher wouldn’t be in this situation.

And while I don’t think it played a role in Alabama football deciding to take Holstein’s commitment now, it probably didn’t hurt Saban’s feelings to put the finishing touches on it.
