1B. 1988

Head coach: Don Nehlen
Record: 11-1

Nothing will cause pain to older Mountaineer fans like the 1988 team. It was – and is – WVU’s most tragic and heart-wrenching season. Thank God us younger generations didn’t have to live through that. It was the first time in history that WVU had a truly great team from top to bottom with guys who have since become Mountaineer legends.

It wasn’t only one of the most heartbreaking seasons the world has ever seen, but the best because WVU went undefeated in the regular season. Yes, you did read that right, the West Virginia University Mountaineers who are located in Morgantown, W.V., went undefeated and played in the national title game. Sometimes I even have to say it out loud a couple times to make it believable.

The 1988 season was the original “what if” season for the Mountaineers. The team was absolutely rolling through the season and was in the position to win the national championship. But because we’re the Mountaineers and we love misery our star quarterback Major Harris exited the game after three plays because he dislocated his shoulder.

The Mountaineers ended up losing to Notre Dame 34-21 in a season that WVU fans painfully think about to this day.
