A favorable but challenging schedule

It takes a lot for a team to reach the playoff. You need to be really good and you also have to be a little lucky. The schedule also matters too and it’s not bad at all for Utah football.

The first game of the season is at Florida, which will be a challenge under new head coach Billy Napier. It’s also going to be one of the most fascinating games of Week 1 because it will be Utah’s chance to beat a well-known SEC program on the road, setting the tone for the season.

And even if Florida isn’t back to being in Florida in 2022, even if the Gators are solid, that win will count for something, especially with the committee.

It will also give Utah a margin for error. USC has to play Utah in Salt Lake City but the Utes have to go to Oregon. San Diego State also comes to Utah but road trips to Arizona State and UCLA loom.

The good news is that with the new Pac-12 rules, the teams with the two best records will play for the Pac-12 title, and if Utah football only loses one conference game, it should make the title game and if the Utes won that to finish 12-1, a playoff berth could easily be a reality.

The problem is winning 12 games in that scenario is much easier said than done. Still, don’t count out the Utes in 2022. They have playoff potential written all over them.
