2. USC Trojans

The Pac-12 has not had a representative in the College Football Playoff since Washington in 2016. The conference moving away from division champions in its title game is a plus for a conference that is too often forgotten if one of its top teams loses a game. Ensuring its two best teams play for the conference title is a plus value add for the Pac-12 and its champion.

It is no guarantee the Pac-12 champion won’t have two or three losses but one could say that about any conference outside the SEC.

There are four teams that should be annual contender for the Pac-12 title: Utah, Oregon, Stanford and USC. Stanford has had some down years but now that they have given some allowances during the early signing period, the Cardinal can compete on the recruiting trail better.

USC does seem like the shiny new toy with new head coach Lincoln Riley and their new player via the transfer portal. However, the Trojans are the marquee program of the west coast. If USC is playing in the championship game against a one-loss Oregon, Utah or Stanford, that looks better than playing a seven-win team from the North.
