A quarterback battle could be on the horizon, plus an opportunity for new players to step up

Over the offseason, MTSU football head coach Rick Stockstill reorganized his coaching staff. In comes former Samford offensive coordinator Mitch Stewart. Stewart runs the typical up-tempo, no-huddle offense so prevalent in college football today, and has had good reviews from Stockstill in the early going.

The biggest question for MTSU may be who in the heck is actually going to do anything in this offense. Frank Peasant is 2021’s leading rusher, and he had just 372 yards on 81 carries. The two leading receivers are Yusuf Ali and Jaylin Lane, and both of those players had less than 500 yards receiving in 2021.

In other words, there’s a lot of opportunity for new guys to step up.

At quarterback, there could be a battle between Chase Cunningham and Nicholas Vattiato. Cunningham looked to be the better quarterback after Vattiato’s injury, but there’s a possibility Vattiato wins the job back.

On offensive line, the team looks very barren. Four starters are gone, which is unfortunate, as the unit was top 40 in the nation in sack percentage allowed.
