Kansas football had one of the worst defenses in the country last season.

The Jayhawks’ offense was one of the worst in the Big 12; the defense was one of the worst in the country. The only team in the country that allowed more points per game was UMass; the only team that allowed more third-down conversions was Akron. Only Arkansas State was worse in rushing defense. The passing defense wasn’t as abysmal (81st in the country).

Despite the woeful statistics from last season, Leipold said the most exciting part of spring practice was watching the defense because they have added weight and are becoming more comfortable with the scheme.

One strategic thing that Leipold and his staff did in the portal was take players from winning programs. UCF transfer Eriq Gilyard gives the Kansas linebacking corps production and depth. Miami (OH) transfer Lonnie Phelps can help replace the production of Kyron Johnson in the sack department.

Kenny Logans, Jr. is an All-Big 12 safety joined by Purdue transfer Marvin Grant and Jarrett Paul over from Eastern Michigan and Rutgers. Where the defense needs the most help is along the defensive line. Phelps will contribute against the pass but the Jayhawks need help against the run. The Jayhawks need more beef in the trenches.

Sam Burt returns upfront and both Kenean Caldwell and Caleb Sampson have to get in the opponents’ backfield more often than they did last season.
