Can Wake Forest football repeat last season’s success?
By Dante Pryor
How many games will Wake Forest football win this fall?
- Thursday, Sept. 1: VMI (W) –Wake Forest should make short work of Keydets in its home opener.
- Saturday, Sept. 10: at Vanderbilt (W) — The Commodores should be better this year, but Wake Forest has a better roster, even if it does not have Hartman.
- Saturday, Sept. 17: Liberty (W) — This is a toss-up game, but Wake Forest is at home and should beat Liberty, who has to learn how to win without Malik Willis.
- Saturday, Sept. 24: Clemson (L) — Wake Forest struggled to block Clemson’s defensive line last season and was not at full strength. The D-line will be at full strength, barring injury. Clemson wins big.
- Saturday, Oct. 1: at Florida State (L) — This game is about Sam Hartman’s worth. If he plays, Wake Forest wins; if he doesn’t, the Deacons lose.
- Saturday, Oct. 8: Army (L) — Similar to the FSU game, Wake Forest’s success against the Black Knights is determined by Sam Hartman’s health.
- Saturday, Oct. 22: Boston College (W) — The Eagles have a retooled offensive line. If it has not gelled, Wake Forest’s pass rush could have a lot of success against the Eagles.
- Saturday, Oct. 29: at Louisville (L) — This game could be an ACC game of the year candidate if Hartman plays. Malik Cunningham has a big day against Wake Forest.
- Saturday, Nov. 5: at NC State (L) — Wake Forest will struggle to block the Wolfpack, just like they will against Clemson.
- Saturday, Nov. 12: North Carolina (W) — Injuries to running back British Brown and wide receiver Antoine Green hamper the Tar Heels’ offense. Green might be back in this one but might not be in form.
- Saturday, Nov. 19: Syracuse (W) — Wake Forest better be careful here. Syracuse will have one of the best running games in the ACC, and Wake is not good against the run.
- Saturday, Nov. 26: at Duke (W) — The Blue Devils are in complete rebuild mode and will struggle to slow Wake Forest’s offense.
Prediction: (7-5, 3-5 ACC)
This record has everything to do with Sam Hartman’s injury. Wake Forest’s offense is quarterback-friendly, but Hartman knows the nuances of the offense like no other. If Hartman misses significant time, the Deacons could be in some trouble.
