Week 5: Home vs. Illinois

In Week 5, the Badgers take on the Illinois Fighting Illini, who are led by ex-Badger head coach Bret Bielema.

Bielema’s first two seasons in Champaign have not gone as planned, as the Illini are a combined 7-14. However, with Syracuse transfer Tommy DeVito starting at quarterback this season, some of the Illini faithful have hope. During his time at Syracuse, DeVito had some bright moments- including leading the Orange to a 2018 upset win over Clemson.

I expect a low-scoring, run-heavy tilt between these teams- with the Badgers prevailing in the fourth quarter.

Prediction: Wisconsin 20, Illinois 13 (4-1)

Week 6: Away vs. Northwestern

After a 2020 campaign in which Northwestern came up just short of winning the Big Ten Championship, the Wildcats took a major step back in 2021.

They won only three games last season- having to replace a defense that was one of the nation’s best in 2020. Head coach Pat Fitzgerald has proven his ability to bounce back after disappointing seasons, but he is going to need quarterback Ryan Hilinski to play his best football yet.

Many Badger fans will presumably make the short drive to Evanston- giving the game a bit more of a neutral atmosphere. Wisconsin should win this one handily.

Prediction: Wisconsin 28, Northwestern 10 (5-1)
