Notre Dame football: Avery Davis is out for the season…again

Notre Dame was going to rely on the diversity of its receiving corps. There aren’t any dynamic playmakers on the perimeter, but with Michael Mayer at tight end, arguably the best tight end in the country patrolling the seams, and Lorenzo Styles working the perimeter, the Irish needed a consistent slot receiver to keep defenses honest underneath.

That role belongs to Avery Davis, or at least it did. The graduate receiver has torn his ACL and is again out for the season. Davis tore his ACL against Navy and missed the rest of the season last year. This news is horrible for Notre Dame football and its College Football Playoff aspirations. Irish receivers needed Davis to free up opportunities for Mayer and the rest of the receiving corps.

Davis was Notre Dame’s best slot option since Chris Finke. He forced coverage away from Mayer, who was good at yards after the catch. Veteran receiver Braden Lenzy could emerge as an option in the slot, but he is not as polished a route runner as Davis.

Lenzy, sophomore Deon Colzie, or freshman Tobian Merriweather will have to slide into that role.
