5 things we learned in College Football Week 0
Vanderbilt is kinda legit
Northwestern probably had the most impressive win of College Football Week 0 but Vanderbilt might have been a close second.
Vanderbilt isn’t used to winning games and it was definitely weird to see the Commodores beating someone 63-10. But Clark Lea has done a great job adding real depth and talent to this program on the recruiting trail. He also has a good quarterback in Mike Wright.
Hawaii was a bowl team last season and even though it lost a lot of pieces, the game was expected to be competitive. Instead, Wright accounted for over 300 total yards (163 on the ground) and scored on an 87-yard touchdown run.
The Commodores racked up more than 400 yards rushing and it was the kind of performance you expect to see from SEC other programs but not Vanderbilt.
So kudos to the Commodores and to the SEC because if this Vandy squad is an SEC bottom feeder, then the league is loaded.
Florida State has a pulse
Most people believe that Mike Norvell isn’t going to survive the season and you can count me among those. But the Seminoles actually looked like a Florida State team on Saturday in a 47-7 win over Duquesne.
Jordan Travis completed 11-of-15 passes for 204 yards and the defense was stellar. The real test will come next week with LSU on the schedule but after watching the Noles on Saturday, I feel like they have a better chance than people realize.
Norvell is on the hot seat but beating LSU would certainly relieve the pressure and in Brian Kelly’s first game as Tigers’ head coach, it’s more winnable than I originally thought.
