21. Do we hear anything about a playoff expansion?

Last year, it sounded like we were on the doorstep of an expanded playoff. Under this proposal, we were going to see a 12-team field that consisted of the top four seeds, who were conference champions, would receive a bye. The first round would be hosted by the higher seeded teams, while the quarterfinal and semifinals would take over the New Year’s Six bowl format, and a neutral site national championship.

This seemed to be on its way to happening, but there was pushback from the ACC, Big Ten, and Pac-12 as they voted against the first draft of the proposal. While it appeared this format would eventually come to fruition, the jarring exit of Texas and Oklahoma from the Big 12 to the SEC really broke the trust of the conference leaders and set a chain reaction that has led to where we are today, on the verge of super conferences.

While it is unexpected to hear something concrete this season, expansion is coming and I expect we’ll hear more about rumors and meetings this year to explore the best options going forward.

With the expectation of super conferences inevitable, the concerns over conference championship ties to seeding may become irrelevant. Personally, I believe that we will see an eight-team playoff first, but it is only a matter of time (and money) until we see 12 and 16 teams in the field.

I hope you all are excited for an 8-4 SEC team getting into the big dance.
