The Main Event

Notre Dame vs. Ohio State (7:30 p.m. ET) on ABC

Truly a big-time game of big-time games takes place in Columbus on week one, as No. 5 Notre Dame travels to take on No. 2 Ohio State. One note to keep an eye on is if center Jarrett Patterson is good to go for this game. He’s a big anchor piece on the offensive line, and Ohio State has guys in the front seven that could harass new Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner.

On the other side of the ball, Ohio State obviously has CJ Stroud and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, but also an offensive line that should be one of the nation’s best.

The “keep an eye on it” games

Utah vs. Florida (7 p.m. ET) on ESPN

If Utah wants to prove their mettle, they’ll go into Gainesville and win against a Florida squad that has a first-year head coach and reduced expectations this year. Still, this Florida team has talent on both sides of the ball, and Utah will face a stiff challenge.

Army vs. Coastal Carolina (7 p.m. ET) on ESPN+

Perhaps the most compelling Group of Five game this week, Army’s triple option offense meets a totally different kind of option attack in Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers will hope to keep Sun Belt offensive player of the year Grayson McCall out of the clutches of early-round draft prospect Andre Carter II of Army.

Another player to look out for is Coastal Carolina edge rusher Josaiah Stewart. He could cause Army’s offense problems.

Memphis vs. Mississippi State (7:30 PM ET) – ESPNU

This could be a crossroads game for Ryan Silverfield, as Memphis gets Mississippi State in Starkville to start Week 1. Silverfield’s team looks solidly average, while Mississippi State needs to figure out how to replace receiver Makai Polk and cornerback Martin Emerson.

Watch this game to see what kind of yardage totals are put up. If it turns into a shootout, Memphis may have a shot to win the contest.
