10. Kansas Jayhawks (1-0)

Considering the Jayhawks have had issues beating FCS teams before, their 56-10 decimation of Tennessee Tech showed a step in the right direction. The Jayhawks established the run early and often, rushing for 297 yards and six touchdowns. The passing game was not dynamic, but it did not have to be.

Defensively, the Jayhawks allowed 190 yards at under 5 yards per play. The Golden Eagles were unable to get anything going. Kansas’ schedule gets more difficult next week against West Virginia.

9. West Virginia Mountaineers (0-1)

The Mountaineers played in one of the weekend’s best games in the Backyard Brawl against the Pitt Panthers. Though West Virginia came up short against Pitt, falling 38-31, head coach Neil Brown has to be encouraged by how well the Mountaineers played against last season’s ACC champions.

J.T. Daniels looked good in his debut as West Virginia’s quarterback, throwing for 214 yards and two touchdowns. Though the defense gave up 338 yards to Pitt quarterback Kedon Slovis, they sacked him five times.

The Mountaineers play Kansas next weekend.

8. TCU Horned Frogs (1-0)

The Horned Frogs looked crisp in new head coach Sonny Dykes’ first game against the Colorado Buffaloes. The run game, not the passing game, carried the day for the Frogs. Led by Kendre Miller, TCU rushed for 275 yards and four touchdowns.

The defense was also impressive, holding the Buffs to just one late fourth-quarter touchdown. The Frogs let the Buffaloes get close but had them to field goals and stopped them on downs on three trips inside the 25-yard line. TCU opens at home against Tarleton next week.
