5. Will JJ McCarthy do enough to win the starting job at Michigan?

Even though it is Week 2, Michigan’s quarterback competition between senior Cade McNamara and sophomore JJ McCarthy is still ongoing.

Prior to last weekend’s season opener, Harbaugh announced that McNamara would start Week 1 against Colorado State and that McCarthy would get the nod this weekend against Hawaii.

After leading Michigan to its first-ever college football playoff appearance last season, Cade McNamara didn’t have a dazzling Week 1 performance. He completed only 50 percent of his passes for a mere 136 yards. Nevertheless, McNamara is the more battle-tested and experienced of the two. He has already proven his ability to make good decisions — throwing only six interceptions last season.

In spite of McNamara’s incredibly efficient 2021 season, Harbaugh’s staff clearly believes that McCarthy could be the best option to take the team to new heights this season. After appearing in eleven games last season, mainly in short-yardage situations, McCarthy has proven his elite running ability. Now it is time for him to prove that he can make good decisions in the pocket.

What seems like a never-ending quarterback controversy has definitely divided the Michigan fanbase. Regardless if Wolverine fans are on Team McNamara or Team McCarthy, everyone is hoping for some clarity before conference play begins.
