4. Iowa: Got any Touchdowns?

“At least Iowa’s defense looked great last week! Two safeties!”  This is the nicest thing that anyone could say about Iowa after their 7-3 victory over South Dakota State.

With four of Iowa’s seven points coming from safeties, the defense actually outscored the Hawkeye offense. Quarterback Spencer Petras threw for only 109 yards, and the Hawkeye running game averaged a mere 1.6 yards per carry.

Nevertheless, the Hawkeyes are 1-0 and now turn to the Week 2 rivalry game against Iowa State. The Hawkeye defense will have a much tougher challenge on Saturday as they go up against Cyclone quarterback Hunter Dekkers, who threw four touchdown passes in a Week 1 victory.

For Iowa to have a successful season, this test against the Hawkeyes is a crucial game, as the schedule only will get tougher down the road. In Big Ten play, head coach Kirk Ferentz’s squad will have to take on Michigan, Ohio State, and Wisconsin- all of whom are currently ranked.

It is safe to say that we will learn a lot about the potential of this Iowa team on Saturday. For Hawkeye fans, hopefully Week 1’s offensive fiasco was a fluke.
