Iowa State Football: 3 takeaways from first Cy-Hawk win since 2014

3. The Iowa Hawkeyes have to fix their offense
It is difficult to watch this game and not think that head coach Kirk Ferentz is wasting a championship-level (and possibly a CFP-caliber) defense with an ineffective offense. The Hawkeyes are one of the best defenses in the country. In addition, they are also one of the best special teams units in the nation.
The defense forced three turnovers, allowing 313 yards of total offense and about four yards per play. The special teams blocked two punts. The Hawkeyes gave up just ten points, yet they still lost. It’s 2022, rarely does a football team give up 10 points and still lose a game.
The offense is flat bad; there is no other way to say it. The passing game had no play that was more than 15 yards and just three plays of ten or more yards. Spencer Petras was bad last season and has been bad so far.
After scoring zero passing touchdowns against FCS South Dakota, there was little hope they’d score against Iowa State, and Petras did not throw a touchdown pass again. It might be time to make a change at quarterback and offensive coordinator. Can coach Ferentz fire or reassign his son?
