Iowa State Football: 3 takeaways from first Cy-Hawk win since 2014

What’s next for Iowa?
Head coach Kirk Ferentz has to evaluate his offensive staff. Last season quarterback Spencer Petras completed less than 60 percent of his passes, throwing ten touchdowns and nine interceptions. If the first two games indicate the rest of the season, Petras might be worse this year.
Brian Ferentz is not the answer as offensive coordinator. There has to be some concern that this offense could waste what is a championship-level defense and special teams if left unaddressed by coach Ferentz. Maybe Iowa can score more than seven points against Nevada.
What’s next for Iowa State?
Head coach Matt Campbell has to be on cloud nine after winning the first Cy-Hawk Trophy of his career. This season’s team had high expectations despite losing veteran quarterback Brock Purdy and two-time All-American running back Breece Hall. However, the coaching staff was very excited about quarterback Hunter Dekkers’ potential and their three running backs this year.
If there is one concern coming out of this game, it is how conservative the Cyclones looked offensively. Coach Campbell could have come into the game thinking Iowa wouldn’t score, and the Cyclones could be more conservative on offense, but two plays over 15 yards are not going to get it done in Big 12 play.
The Cyclones play Ohio next weekend.
